“Between Motion and Stillness: the Artwork of Colin Fraser Gray,” an exhibit featuring sculptures, drawings and tapestries, will be displayed at the Atkinson Gallery during the month of October.
From common-use tools to oil pipes, arranged in an unusual, but active way, Gray’s work expresses motion. Even the artwork that represents objects at rest shows that they have been in frenetic action.
Gray described his work as “an evolution of ideas.” He said it is a reflection of his personal experience, and based on ideas taken from current events.
Gray came to Santa Barbara 27 years ago from England. His reasoning was, “Why go anywhere else?” He now has a daughter who is an art student at City College.
Gray started out by creating sculptures, featuring tools used in a harmonic way. He then made drawings representing those tools in action, and he is now expanding those drawings to tapestries. His intention is to project further.
