Some adjunct faculty will be eligible for health insurance this semester.
City College adjunct and part time teachers have not been offered the possibility of health insurance until now, said Sue Ehrlich, Vice President of Human Resources and Legal Affairs. Faculty members have long debated this issue.
If insurance is offered to City College adjunct faculty, insurance may have to be offered to adjunct faculty elsewhere. This year, the insurance companies have set several requirements for eligibility that most teachers cannot fulfill.
As a result of these requirements, only five out of over 400 adjunct teachers on the City College campus were found eligible. They are receiving insurance this semester, said Pamela Blanchard, Human Resources Tech II.
One of the requirements is a minimum of eight months completed as an adjunct teacher, which Ehrlich said teachers have been outraged by.
The insurance covers only the teacher, excluding the family from possible benefits. Their insurance benefits are limited to medial coverage.
Ehrlich said that even though benefits are now being provided for adjunct faculty, the limited availability and eligibility have changed virtually nothing, satisfying almost no one.
