The Moorpark Raiders could not stop the onslaught brought forth by the Vaqueros at Friday night’s Women’s Volleyball game at Santa Barbara.
City College was backed by a lively crowd all night. Fans pounded on water drums and stomped their feet as the Vaqueros (6-2, 10-5) claimed a victory by winning three games in a row. Students in the stands vocally contested calls made by the referee several times during the night.
“We were focused and held our composure,” said coach Ed Gover. “This was a very good team; both camps were battling for position heading into the playoffs.”
Gover spoke confidently as he mentioned a series of practices that went very well for the Vaqueros. Gover mentioned a rivalry between Santa Barbara and Moorpark, both of whom were looking to claim the number two spot in the division behind Ventura.
“We knew that we had it won,” said Vaquero middle Brianna Stewart. “We all did amazing as a team.” Stewart’s blocks and spikes seemed to keep the Raiders (4-3, 8-5) off balance throughout the game.
Moorpark started out very confidently with a thunderous chant before the game. This didn’t faze the Vaqueros, who got an early lead in the first game and kept the pressure on in winning, 30-22.
The second game saw Moorpark start out with an early lead. This did not disturb Santa Barbara as they fought back and quickly caught up. This was the closest game of the night with both teams struggling back and forth. Still, the Vaqueros rose victoriously with a 30-24 score.
The third game again saw the hometown team with an early lead. They ultimately won by a score of 30-19.
Moorpark was no pushover, as outside hitter Jennifer Atkin’s powerful running serve had Santa Barbara on the ropes throughout the night.
“They are a good team,” said Stewart. “They just fell apart in the end.”
The final home game for the Vaqueros has left the coach and team feeling confident. The team is still not guaranteed a place in the upcoming playoffs but, according to Gover, “We just upped our chances.”
There are two more league games left this season. Tuesday the Vaqueros face the ladies of Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria. Friday they face off against Ventura, which is in first place in the Western State North Division. It may be late in the season, but the Vaqueros show no signs of slowing down.
