The International Student Ambassadors at City College are hosting an international volleyball tournament for students on Saturday, March 15, at West Beach across from Sambos.
“It’s a great event to make new friends, get to know people, and also have a good day at the beach,” said Vasu Patel, International Student Ambassador.
The tournament is $5 per person. The money goes towards refreshments for the players, such as water, soda and sandwiches.
Patel said the tournament is open to all City College students and you don’t need any volleyball experience to play.
“You don’t have to be good; you don’t have to be the best,” said Patel. “Its just a social and fun event.”
Students can form their own teams of seven with one substitute, but must sign up in the international office on campus in order to play.
Patel said the teams should consist of City College students, however friends of participants are welcome to join.
Andreas Sandberg, who is a returning volleyball tournament member and international student, said he has been looking forward to this event since he played last year.
“There’s nothing but nice people there; it’s just fun,” Sandberg said. “It’s a good way to connect with other people.”
Sandberg and his team came in third place last year and were awarded movie tickets.
Patel mentioned this years prizes could include a pre-paid debit card, Starbucks and Ben and Jerry’s cards and City College gear.
Gustavo Perez, who is one of the student ambassadors in charge of the volleyball tournament, encourages students to come and watch the event.
Perez said this event allows participants and spectators alike to meet more students in the City College community.
“With events like the volleyball tournament we get the American and international community together interacting with each other,” Perez said. “That is one of our objectives as City College ambassadors; to make every student feel apart of our community.”
