City College Superintendent-President Dr. Andreea Serban delivered a welcoming speech to the Associated Student Senate on Friday, speaking mostly about its rights.
Serban delivered a special presentation, in which she spent almost an hour describing the California Ed Code, which defines the rights of the different governing bodies on campus.
While at first explaining the basics of the code, she later informed the Senate that while it is encouraged to be part of the developing process, some issues it does not have a say in, such as student pay rate.
Before handing the floor over to Ignacio Alarcon, Academic Senate President, and Liz Auchincloss, president of the Classified Staff Employees’ Association, Serban asked the Student Senate if there were any questions.
Atty Garfinkel, vice-president of senate affairs, questioned Serban about the accuracy of student pay rates not being part of student consultation.
Student Senate President Emily Harrington did not offer any questions or comment.
After the senate meeting adjourned, Garfinkel expanded on her position.
“Student employees’ only representation is the Student Senate,” she said.
Garfinkel added that there is no group on campus currently representing student employees other than the Student Senate. When wages and hours are cut, a portion of our financial aid packet is reduced, she added.
When asked about her feelings regarding the administration, Garfinkel said, “I have no desire to piss anyone off. I would very much like for all administration to work together to accommodate student rights.”
