City College’s beach volleyball team showed up to their game on Friday, Feb. 2 at East Beach ready to play, while wearing sweats and hoodies to avoid the cold weather.
The women’s beach volleyball team took their second win of the season against Sierra College, finishing with a score of 2-0.
The team began their season on Friday morning against Fresno College ending with a final score of 3-2, and completed the day with a final match against Sierra College.
“The communication was there,” Head Coach Ariana Garner said. “This is definitely a great start to the 2024 season.”
Ashley Rossi and Olivia Medina stepped out as the first pair to play and dominated both games back to back. Medina was last seasons’ Western State Conference Pairs champion with alumni Emma Crabbe playing by her side. Medina is now a second year at City College, playing with Ashley Rossi who is also a second year at City College.
Rossi and Medina earned the win against Sierra College in both sets with a first score of 21-6 and a second score of 21-14.
“It would have been easier to know how we were doing if the wind didn’t keep messing with the score sheets,” Medina said to Rossi, as the two ran to the other side of the court.
Alexis Zevenbergen and Gabby Russell won both sets against Sierra, with two identical scores of 21-14. Both players communicated throughout both sets to conquer the first win of the season.
“I got your back,” Zevenbergen yelled to Russell from behind while the ball flew over her head.
Two of the newest players, Carolina Koceman and Charlotte Wilson earned the Vaqueros the lead of 2-1 against both Fresno and Sierra College. After three sets against Sierra, the final scores were 21-17, 15-21, and 15-13 giving them the winning score over Sierra.
Both Koceman and Wilson shared a great amount of sharp serves and plays powering through each set.
As the game came to a close, the sun made its last appearance and both teams were in a sweat.
“We ended with a great win right before the storm caught up to us,” Garner said to the team after the game.
Players Celia Espinoza and Carly Hanna competed against Sierra with a three set match, and close scores of 21-19, 15-21, and 15-3 making a 4-1 team win. Espinoza and Hanna secured the win against Fresno prior to Sierra with a victory of 3-2.
With five pairs in total, the Vaqueros dominated both teams with a 2-0 start to the 2024 spring season.
City College’s beach volleyball team will be competing next against Long Beach followed by Orange Coast College back to back on Friday, Feb. 16 at 11 a.m. at East Beach.
