The Vaqueros beat the LA Valley Monarchs with a score of 52-0 on Saturday, Oct. 22 at La Playa Stadium.
To start off the game, the Vaqueros were receiving the ball at the kickoff. For the first play of the game wide receiver Kayden Chan, caught the kickoff ball and ran it to the end zone, and scored a touchdown. Kicker Joe Bowman followed and scored an extra point field goal making the score 7-0 within the first 30 seconds.
“I feel like it really set the tone for the game, it showed that we were coming to play,” Chan said.
Towards the end of the first quarter running back, Brandon Smith scored a touchdown from the 23-yard line making the Vaqueros go into the second quarter with a lead of 21-0.
With aggression and adrenaline building up, the players had many fights and flags come their way. Taunting began and there was a penalty called for a player who was taunting with the gesture of a throat slash.
“It’s never a good day when you are losing, we try to tell our guys to play the game and let the other team make the mistakes,” assistant head coach Don Willis said.
Within the duration of the second quarter, Smith managed to achieve his third touchdown of the game and extend the lead 27-0.
“It feels pretty good but all the credit goes to my offensive linemen, they held it down and they are the big reason why I scored,” Smith said.
The Vaqueros were now on defense and defensive lineman Caleb McNeill-Tyler sacked the quarterback and recovered the fumble putting the Vaqueros in possession of the ball.
When the Monarchs were back to being on the offense linebacker Joe Carson intercepted the pass and ran to the end zone scoring a touchdown and making the score 37-0.
“We have been practicing all week on that play, we were expecting to do that so I’m glad we were able to get the work in before,” Carson said.
Shortly after that pick-six, defensive back Jamari Cannon intercepted another pass intended for the Monarchs and ran 55 yards to the end zone. However he did not score due to a holding call, and the Vaqueros were back in possession of the ball ending the third quarter with a score of 38-0.
Moments later, quarterback Alex Johnson threw an interception which set back the Vaqueros.
In the final quarter of the game, linebacker Ryan Tung intercepted at the 50-yard line and ran with the ball to the seven-yard line. However, running back Mekhi Norfleet dropped the ball and the Monarchs recovered the fumble.
The Vaqueros scored two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
After an aggressive game, City College were the victors finishing with a score of 52-0.
“They all play really well and win together, that is what I care about the most,” Willis said.
