City College won the Women’s Golf State Championship and Fanny Johansson took home the individual state crown Tuesday, Nov. 19, at Tracy Golf Course.
The Vaqueros (69-3 overall, 32-0 conference) defeated fellow Southern California Regional qualifier Fullerton College by four strokes, earning its third state title in eight years.
“We were really nervous,” said Johansson, WSC Player of the Year.
On day one City College ended with a 10-stroke lead. Nerves were high as the final groups came in and Fullerton was gaining strokes on the Vaqueros. With only two groups left and the lead gone, it was only fitting that the two Vaqueros’ sophomores Jackie Ramirez and Megan Herrerra stepped up and assured the victory in their final appearance for City College.
“Jackie came in with an 84 and then found out Megan needed to make par or bogey and we would win,” said Johansson. “When she got in with an 82 we were really happy.”
Johansson shot a tournament low, one over par 74, on the first day and followed that up with a 77 Tuesday, giving her the individual state championship by 8 strokes over Fullerton’s Nea Bennett. City College’s Vanesa Villa (10th) and Saralisa Ortega (19th) were also a part of the 25 players who competed for the individual championships.
The Vaqueros’ last defeat was Sept. 30, by Canada College, who finished third in the State Championship. The two other losses came from Palomar College who the Vaqueros ousted in the Southern California Regionals.
Final two-day scores for the Vaqueros were: Vanesa Villa (77-86), Saralisa Ortega (83-86), Maggie Daly (83-87), Megan Herrerra (88-82), Jackie Ramirez (87-84) and Fanny Johansson (74-77).
