City College women’s golf is looking to continue their successful start to the 2013 campaign as the regular season winds down and the postseason creeps closer.
With an overall record of 41-3, and an undefeated conference record of 12-0, women’s golf is well on their way to being in contention for the state title.
The team has placed second at each invitational, and has won each conference match.
“Our goal is to win the state championships,” said Fanny Johansson, a freshman from Sweden. “We need to keep practicing well and try to take what we know into all the tournaments.”
Johansson has stepped up as one of the leaders on this team, and it shows through her play. In the past two matches, she has finished second and third place, respectively.
“Our coach has really helped me out with my technique and just everything about the game,” she said.
Along with Johansson, fellow freshman Vanessa Villa has also stepped up for the team, finishing in third place at their most recent conference match.
“The freshmen are really stepping up this year,” said sophomore Haley True, one of only three returners on the team. “We kind of help them out and show them the ropes, but they honestly don’t need too much.”
True also said that the team is focusing on consistency, which is something they struggled with in the past few seasons.
“We always had talent,” she said, “but this year the team is putting in the extra work to stay consistent.”
The two colleges that City College seems to be competing with are Palomar College and Canada College.
“Palomar and Canada are our biggest opponents right now,” said Fanny Johansson. “They are the teams that have kept us from finishing first. I hope we get to compete in state against them.”
The Vaqueros are coached by Chuck Melendez, who is the head both for both the men’s and women’s golf teams. He is a four-time Western State Conference Women’s golf Coach of the Year, and has won two state titles here at City College.
The Vaqueros plays again on Wed., Oct. 4, in another conference match, and they hope to stay undefeated.
On Mon., Oct. 14, the team will host the Santa Barbara City College Invitational at Santa Barbara Golf Course.
“I’m looking forward to the SBCC invitational,” said Haley True. “We all know this course really well so that should give us an advantage. We just need our hard work to keep paying off.”
City College is looking to finish out the season strong before the WSC Championships begin in early November.
