City College women’s soccer star Brandie Harris is playing for more than just wins this year.
A promise to her grandfather fuels the dynamic forward.
This past June Harris’ grandfather was diagnosed with cancer. He asked her to continue playing, to see how far and where it could take her. Only five games into this season, Harris has three multi-goal games, including two hat tricks, and has been recognized by the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table as the Athlete of the Week.
“In a way it makes me play harder, what I promised to my grandpa, but I’ve always been a hard worker on the field so it’s just an automatic thing,” said Harris (No. 2).
The Santa Barbara native and product of Dos Pueblos High School, led the team with 14 goals last year. She was also named to the 2012 Western State Conference North first team.
“Brandie brings goals and great scoring opportunities with her speed, no one can match up to her,” said sophomore goalkeeper Brianna Robinson (No. 1).
With all of the early season success, the sophomore has taken on a leadership role as the predominately freshman squad looks to Harris. Bearing the captain “C” on her arm, Harris’ energy and intensity on the field is unmatched.
“Brandie leads by example, she’s a forward and she scores goals. She’s a good student, all positive,” said head coach John Sisterson.
Harris plans to attend Azusa Pacific University to pursue a career in nursing, specifically the birth and delivery ward.
“I just want to help people overall, so wherever nursing takes me,” said Harris.
With an eye on the future, Harris remains focused on school and soccer as the season draws on.
After 5 games, the Vaqueros stand at 3-2 on the season and hope to add to their 2 game winning streak as they take on College of the Canyons at 2 p.m. Sept. 24 at La Playa Stadium. In the midst of a five game home stretch, the Vaqueros will host the Oxnard College Condors at 2 p.m. Oct. 1 to kick off conference play.
