City College will be hosting the 20th annual Golf Classic at La Cumbre Country Club to endorse the athletics program.
$35,000 was raised at last year’s tournament. A match program was put in place so all proceeds from the Campaign for Student Success was matched 50 cents on the dollar. Ultimately, more than $50,000 was raised.
“It was a really big success,” said Athletic Director Ryan Byrne. “This year we’re excited about the tournament and honoring Santa Barbara Bank & Trust and where they’re going with Union Bank.”
“Honoring the Past and Celebrating the Future” is this year’s theme for the Golf Classic. Each team will be made up of four members and the entry fee ranges from $1,100 – $1,200, which includes a luncheon, cart, green fees, tee prizes and entry into most contests. The event is in honor of Santa Barbara Bank & Trust and Union Bank. There will be a pre-tournament recognition ceremony and a banquet after.
Union Bank bought out Santa Barbara Bank & Trust last year in a $1.51 billion deal.
“We’re totally jazzed that SBCC has recognized the bank this year,” said Randy Weiss, community outreach and foundation officer for Santa Barbara Bank & Trust and Union Bank. “I’m a product of the junior college program and I personally see the benefits of a two-year educational opportunity. It’s a golden jewel.”
Roughly 400 student athletes and cheerleaders participate in the athletic program, for which the fundraiser is important.
“In order to be a great institution we can’t rely strictly on the state budget to provide us the resources we need,” Byrne said.
This year, Santa Barbara Bank & Trust along with Union Bank will contribute $5,000 to the academic achievement zone, which helps student athletes reach their educational goals.
There is currently room for three more foursomes to enter the tournament.
