After a long Sunday of watching your favorite football team win the big game (or lose, if you’re a Chargers fan like me), it feels good to go outside and throw the ol’ pigskin around for real.
However, as a City College student, that task is almost impossible if you want to throw the football around at La Playa Stadium.
City College has a scenic field, overlooking a picturesque beach in beautiful Santa Barbara, California. However, the school also has a rule stating “no group or individual use of any portion of the field without a Community Services Permit,” according to a sign outside the stadium.
Without sounding like a bitter teenage college student who hates any rules or regulations, that’s absolutely ridiculous.
Many students come to City College for the four-year college experience, without the four-year college price. A big part of that college experience for plenty of students is recreational sports.
For those students who want to avoid the life sucking hellhole that is Isla Vista, the surrounding area of City College offers no fields or courts for recreational sports.
The school claims that it is a “liability issue for the district as well as protecting a multi-million dollar playing facility,” according to Athletic Director Ryan Byrne.
Before reading on, understand this is in no way, shape, or form an article to diss the faculty of a school that I thoroughly enjoy, but simply a small complaint that, in my opinion, could easily be fixed.
Here’s one solution that could make everyone happy: if any City College student wants to use the field, they must sign a waiver claiming that any injury is not the responsibility of the school.
Right away, the liability issue is solved.
Now, I understand that doesn’t protect the “multi-million dollar playing facility,” but honestly, what’s the point of having a multi-million dollar facility if it can’t be used by interested students?
