On Friday, Sept. 27 the Associated Student Government filled the last of the remaining positions, leaving ASG with a full board ready for the upcoming school year.
Isla Vista Community Representative
After discussion on what issues City College students face living in Isla Vista as well as the struggles of the community in general, the ASG board voted for Afrada Teklai as Isla Vista Community Representative.
When asked about the issues that affect Isla Vista and what solutions might be available, Teklai mentioned her involvement in Isla Vista through community service projects and events.
“I have already taken initiatives to solve this issue by connecting to the supervisors of the road enhancement program, who work to keep the streets of Isla Vista clean and adapt a project to improve our environment,” Teklai said. “I plan to encourage the student body to volunteer and help those in need.”
The board continued to discuss the various issues that the community of Isla Vista faces, how they can be addressed properly, and what ideas the interviewees had in mind. When asked about her past experiences, Teklai gave a passionate response saying “I have raised over $1,200 in fundraising revenue put towards building infrastructure and the people of my community. I am someone that brings results.”
Commissioner of clubs and organizations
Bearing in mind the importance of creating a safe and welcoming community on campus, Mia Fanucchi was voted on the board to be the Commissioner of clubs and organizations. Fanucchi will have the responsibility of supporting clubs on campus and addressing any issues they may face in the upcoming school year.
“I think clubs are very important to the school, because it brings a sense of community for students on campus, and it is a way for them to get involved and meet new people and talk to new people,” Fanucchi said.
She also encouraged starting conversations around the overall climate on campus and getting people involved to ensure that people feel comfortable on campus.
Secretary
With all the inner workings that come with planning events and being the voice of the student body on campus, attention to detail and the ability to produce results under pressure are necessary traits to have when looking for a Secretary.
Political Science major Francis Jacobs was voted into the role for this school year.
Having years of professional soccer experience from the ages of 14 to 18, Jacobs expressed how he was accustomed to delivering to a high standard under pressure.
“I think, being in that situation where it’s not sort of a fight or flight at every moment on the field. But you know you have to perform,” Jacobs said.
Commissioner of Academics
Anneliese Resse aims to play an active role in ensuring student voices are heard when it comes to their education, and input on campus as the new Commissioner of Academics.
“I think it’s very important to talk to multiple students, get various perspectives, and then go off that to best represent them,” Resse said.
In efforts to create a better student-professor dynamic, the board asked about the factors that affect the relationship between students and their professors with Resse expressing a need for a building of mutual respect and understanding.
Commissioner of Fundraising
At a time when ASG is facing possible financial constraints in the upcoming year, a new ambitious set of eyes and a think-outside-the-box mentality are desired for the role of Commissioner of fundraising. Marco Bonometti expressed he could be just that.
Bonometti expressed his goals and aspirations for the upcoming year by presenting ideas for more community events as well as aiming to have possible fundraisers every month.
“[We should know], where funds are going to go from each event to ensure that, one, they’re organized, two, they’re accessible, and three, they’re very transparent,” Bonometti explained.
Commissioner of Sustainability
Voted into the position of Commissioner of Sustainability was Noah Walls.
“I see myself trying to collaborate with local organizations centered around sustainability,” Walls said.
Not only would there be an effort to promote sustainability on campus, but Walls expressed an interest in creating opportunities for students through sustainability and possibly helping them get a headstart in something that they’re interested in.
“My goal with that is to provide opportunities to students for them to not only get themselves interested in sustainability but to kind of advance their interests,” Walls said.
Commissioner of Accessibility
Commissioner of Accessibility for this year will be Kaila Service, and while she admitted that she isn’t entirely familiar with struggles that disabled students face every day on campus, she is making an effort to find and address them.
“I think it’s going to be eye-opening to start seeing those problems around campus and start looking for them,” Service said.
Despite not having much firsthand knowledge on the subject, Service aims to provide a voice for those affected by a disability, and work on making events and activities on campus accessible for all.
The next ASG meeting will take place on Friday, Oct. 4.
