A City College student was caught trying to steal several expensive electronics from the multimedia and technologies department’s storage cage located in the Occupational Education Building on March 24.
A student security worker saw her behaving suspiciously on the path leading from East Campus down to Loma Alta. Campus Security observed the student hiding a large silver object in the bushes and walked back up the path to East Campus. Security checked the bush and found a silver Hitachi projector with a current estimated value of $500, but would have been $3,500 new.
The suspect was found in the storage cage, which the department keeps used and outdated electronics and access to it is strictly for faculty. Security suspects the student was returning to steal more items before they found her.
Staff leaves the cage open when they momentarily leave, so student did not technically break into the cage, security said.
No police contact was made, but the student was referred to the dean of student discipline.
