After the departure and retirement of members of City College staff last year, Administration has opened up 10 positions for new faculty hires.
On Oct. 22, after discussing and hearing pleas for 24 positions up the vote, the Academic Senate voted and finalized its decision for the coming academic year.
It was an almost unanimous view of the Academic Senate that just 10 faculty hires for the 2015-16 school year were not enough to cover the concerns of Department Chairs.
“We are all aware of how serious this decision is, and how impossible it is. And yet, we have to make these decisions,” said Dean Marilynn Spaventa.
Eight of these new potential faculty will be replacing positions left by previous teachers, while two of the positions will be completely new to the staff last here at City College. The Academic Senate voted for a replacement position in the following departments
- Associate Degree Nursing
- English Skills
- Mathematics
- English
- Psychology
- Earth and Planetary Science — Astronomy
- History
- Luria Library
Two departments, Sociology and English, were chosen to add on a new faculty member, not to just replace.
Though the decisions made by the Academic Senate are the likely outcome of the round of hiring for 2015-16, Administration reserves the right to veto or change any the list, although this is believed to be unlikely.
