Students enrolled in at least six units of coursework can respond to one of four writing contest prompts for a shot at winning a grand.
Selden Cummings, 22-year-old English major, heard about the contest when English professor David Starkey announced it during one of his classes.
“I’m going to try and enter into all four categories,” Cummings said. “I guess a lot of students haven’t entered this year.”
Starkey, who organizes the contest, has pushed the deadline for submissions until 4 p.m. on March 21, in order to give more students a chance to enter.
There are four categories with cash prizes that range from $100 to $1,000.
“I will probably save the money if I win, but it all depends,” Cummings said. “If I get the full-on prize I will probably save it for school or some new instruments.”
For students looking to make a quick submission, Cummings said that the poetry contest is probably the most straightforward of the four.
“The others require a little more specific knowledge. Like the Willson Essay on climate change,” Cummings said.
