Faculty and students gathered on Tuesday, April 23, outside of the Student Services building to celebrate City College co-winning the 2013 Aspen Institute Prize for Community College Excellence.
“We have a common sense of purpose, and that is a culture of excellence,” said City College Superintendent-President Dr. Lori Gaskin. “We have a fervent belief in opportunities for all.”
After Gaskin’s words, City College Board of Trustees’ president Marty Blum joined the stage. The only student that delivered a speech was Edith Rodriguez, a City College electrical engineering major.
“To me, Santa Barbara City College is not just a place to pursue a great education, but a place where I can find support through my counselors, professors and my peers.” said Rodriguez. “A place where I can grow as a leader and has provided me many opportunities to have a successful educational experience.”
City College treated its guests at the celebration with commemorative lapel pins, smoothies and ice cream.
The school will receive $400,000 from the Aspen Institute for the top ranking.
