After three and a half decades of serving City College by tending to its exemplary landscape, a grounds maintenance worker is receiving recognition for his work.
Juan Patino was selected from nominees across the state as one of five California Community College classified employees of the year. The Board of Governors will recognize him on May 7, in Sacramento, California.
“The facilities department could not be more proud of Juan. He’s such a joy to work with,” said Julie Hendricks, director of facilities and campus development. “He sets the standard for customer service and is an inspiration for the rest of his team and the facilities department.”
Patino has been working at City College since 1988, right after graduating high school.
His No. 1 goal is to keep the grounds safe and accessible. Countless faculty and staff sent in letters of recommendation to commend Patino for his work and kind spirit.
“I just reflect what is shown to me when I come here to work. It’s a great place and there are great people to work with,” Patino said.
His boss, Hendricks, wrote that he has an uncanny ability to turn a mass of chaotic weeds into a lush, manicured landscape.
“Juan embodies this spirit of giving and caring for people throughout the college by offering kind gestures that not only raise the level of service but break down barriers that often result in the unfortunate us-versus-them mentality,” said Hendricks.
