City College nursing student Billy Spencer will make his second visit to Haiti during spring break to help families displaced by the 2010 7.0-magnitude earthquake.
Spencer said he could see the destruction as soon as he landed.
“You see the houses and tents that people are still living in even after the earthquake,” he said.
The Santa Barbara native went to Haiti for the first time in 2011, and described the experience as a life-changing cultural shock.
Spencer encourages students to find an exchange program in which they can visit the country and allow a Haitian student to visit Santa Barbara to help families in need.
He has turned to fundraising to help pay for the travel expenses and is raising money for the trip by selling candy bars at his high school campus. In only two weeks Spencer raised all the money for the airplane ticket and accommodation.
“Being able to come back [to Haiti] was a dream of mine and I didn’t know when the next time would be and how I would do it,” Spencer said.
