Student-Trustee Joel Negroni has informed the Associated Student Senate and the Board of Trustees that he will no longer be volunteering his time to any extra-curricular activities.
A second-year business administration major and Marine Corps veteran, Joel Negroni has officially cut ties with all student governance positions to focus on academics and work. He has been working with the student body since Aug. 2011 and his resignation will include the Associated Student Senate, Board of Trustees, and Academic Task Force.
“We will miss him and he’s added a lot to our [senate],” said Geneva Sherman, president of the associated student senate. “It’s good that he’s doing what he needs to, and we respect and support that.”
After spending a year building his career and reputation on campus as a vocal student advocate, Negroni has reminded most that academics will always come first.
“He has his priorities straight on the mark,” said Peter Haslund, president of the board of trustees. Haslund said Negroni approached him a few weeks ago to discuss possibly leaving the board.
“First and foremost, he is a student,” he said. “He is so committed and so alert to the real issues. I’m going to miss him.”
He was recently featured in the Independent, where he was named a “natural leader.”
“I don’t regret any time I’ve spent participating [on the senate and board],” said Negroni. “But, I have hit a personal point where I can’t concentrate. My academics are falling down and I need to reallocate my time.”
At the student senate meeting held Nov. 16, Negroni reassured his constituents that he would continue to be on “stand-by” as an Honorary Member because of his experience on many committees. His admission as an Honorary Member will be brought to a vote, which is likely to pass because of his popular standing.
The date of discussion has not been decided, but will likely happen in the coming weeks.
“I think I speak for everyone when I say that we’re really sad that he’s leaving,” said Sherman. “But I think it’s good he’s decided to take care of himself.”
The close of his address to the senate nearly brought him to tears, as he thanked other senators for their “team effort” and “value.”
“Try to do more [and] don’t be afraid to speak out,” said Negroni.
Under the Student Senate Constitution and By-Laws, Geneva Sherman will appoint a student trustee to take over Negroni’s responsibilities on the senate and the board. No candidates have been brought forward at this time, but will be decided within the next month.
Negroni asked Superintendent-President Lori Gaskin to help circulate a letter explaining his resignation.
