Proposition 30 has dropped to a 46% approval rating over the last month.
Governor Jerry Brown’s tax initiative will temporarily increase personal income taxes on those with incomes over $250,000 per year and increase sales tax by a quarter-cent for four years. Without the proposition, the college faces a cut of over 200 sections of curriculum for the spring and summer terms, and a loss of over 1,000 students in enrollment.
With less than half of voters planning to vote in favor of the measure, California schools may be in serious trouble.
According to the Los Angeles Times, “Tax measures rarely gain support in the closing days of a campaign.”
Last week, in an effort to defeat Prop 30, an Arizona nonprofit, non-taxable group called Americans for Responsible Leadership dropped $11 million in the hands of the California-based Small Business Action Committee PAC, directed by Joel Fox, an anti-tax activist.
Proposition 30 will be resolved on the Nov. 6 ballot.
