Cigarette butts—called the biggest pollutant on campus—may be permanently swept off of City College sidewalks in the coming weeks.
To keep a healthy and clean campus, the Associated Students Senate has started making plans to outline a change in the City College’s smoking policy. These propositions range from allowing campus security to cite students smoking outside of the designated areas, to banning smoking on campus entirely.
“We have to take action,” said student trustee, Joel Negroni. “Give security the thumbs up to establish a fine that whenever they see someone smoking [outside of the designated area]… they take their information, like a parking fine.”
Negroni explained that the “laziness” and “complacency” by smokers has led to an increase in campus pollution and filth. By allowing cigarette butts to be thrown throughout the campus, students feel comfortable with allowing other trash to accumulate as well.
Vinny Primiani, a second year computer science major, disagreed in the proposed changes. “City College is a public place and whatever they want to do is up to them. But, [the college] might as well have a place where [students] can smoke because it’s going to happen regardless.”
Senators stated that they hope that resorting to drastic measures won’t be necessary, but will consider extreme changes should trash continue to be an issue. The student body hopes to create a system that will enable smokers and non-smokers to cooperate in building a healthier, safer and cleaner campus.
