The Student Senate plans to donate MacBook and iPad chargers to the Luria Library, despite financial struggles.
The donation will include two laptop chargers, which are compatible with iPads also, and are to be purchased at $12 a piece through the senate fund. The chargers will be available to rent in the coming weeks.
“There are days when you forget the charger and you’re like, ‘oh wow. I just carried this big 15 pound laptop here’,” said Elie Katezenson, vice president of student affairs. “If [the chargers] said ‘provided by student senate’ [on them], they would remember that.”
Financial burdens this semester have caused recent changes in club grant funding and other planning. Regardless of a limited budget, the message library donations will send to City College students encourages senators.
“I think we just want to get our name out there. And if we can help students in the process, why not” said Geneva Sherman president of the student senate. “We’ll see what happens and donate more depending how much they’re needed.”
Senators hope that through similar gestures the student body will recognize that they are here to work with and for students. But with the recent budget issues, other senators are wary of the small donations.
“We started our meeting saying that we need more money to come in,” said senator Mayra Carvajal, vice president of external affairs. “We need to have [additional] income before we pay for that.”
After deliberation, the senate unanimously concluded that the expenditure of $24 paled in comparison with the much larger financial obligations they have, such as sponsoring events and club funding.
While fiscal arrangements are to be proposed by an Ad Hoc committee within the senate, no fundraising programs have been established yet.
