An addition to the Student Senate’s new proposal may require clubs to provide proof of grant spending.
Currently, clubs go through an application process and are interviewed before receiving grant money from the senate. If the club is applicable for grant money, it will then receive $250 per semester, or $500 total for the school year.
Because of rumors that some clubs may be spending scholarship and grant funding from the Student Senate on inappropriate school functions, such as pizza parties and dinners, senators may require proof of grant spending.
“We’re trying to find ways not to restrict them from using it, but encouraging them to do more with what we can offer them,” said Student Trustee Joel Negroni. “The assistance that we give is key in order for [clubs] to do what [they] need to do, but we can only do so much.”
This proposal would require clubs to outline a fundraising plan during the interview and provide proof at the end of the semester of where the funds went. “It would work as a second part of the grant,” said Geneva Sherman, the Student Senate President.
“Clubs have to be responsible and know what they are accepting,” said student senator Michael Keshmiri.
Clubs will have to provide proof, whether with a receipt or photograph, that grant money is going towards valuable club activities. If it is not, the club may be restricted from further Student Senate funding the following semester. Senators are modeling this proposal after typical grant outlines.
“The senators want to work with the clubs, but our spending is limited,” said Amy Collins, Student Program Advisor. The senate has not reached a decision on funding options, but is planning to vote in the coming weeks.
