The recent police killing of a Black man by five Black police officers clearly shows that “diversity” in hiring Black officers is not a solution for violence against Black communities. Visual diversity which colleges are obsessed with and is frequently used in many other places is a sad and shallow vision of “diversity.” In fact the word diversity has become a trite, trendy catch-all word that seems to mean whatever the user thinks it should mean. And in fact, has come to represent a new form of racial discrimination, certainly on campus. A clear majority of thinking people want race-neutral standards and admission policies. Let’s choose police officers (and college students) more on their abilities and the content of their character than on the color of their skin.
