Paseo Nuevo held its sixth annual fall runway show Saturday with several City College cosmetology volunteers showing off their work making every model’s hair look runway-ready.
The show created a fun and exciting space for the students to promote their skills with many saying that participating at a popular event like that presents unique opportunities to grow.
“You get to do more creative stuff than what you do in school,” said Nicole Nomura, one of the cosmetology students who participated in the event.
Cosmetology student Carlie Kuhns said that the presence of agencies in the audience makes these events a great opportunity to “put yourself out there.”
“I already traded instagrams with someone. This is how I build a clientele,” she said.
Several of the girls laughed and joked with each other as they wrapped up their work and the show was about to begin. Everyone watched as the models lined up by the door, getting ready to make their debut.
The event was held in the center of the marketplace with over a hundred people gathered around to watch. Most of the event was put together by local organizations with the clothing and raffle ticket prizes provided by Angl, Inspire, and Francesca’s, the makeup by Sephora and the hair styling by the cosmetology students. In its first year participating in the event, Santa Barbara High School’s Visual Arts and Design Academy also had volunteers that helped with the production and picked out songs for the DJ.
One of the organizers of the event Mary Lynn Harms Romo said the runway show has been utilizing City College students for the last three years.
Romo was inspired by her husband, a former cosmetology student, to invite the cosmetology academy to the event.
“It’s a relationship we want to grow and flourish, and a great experience for them,” she said.
