Students who want to start a club on campus don’t have to wait until Club Day on Sep. 22.
The office of Student Life is currently accepting applications for review from any student with a club idea. There’s no deadline and no special requirements exist.
But any Vaquero with a vision should know one thing, says student program advisor Amy Collins.
“Make sure that the club is a fun thing to be part of.”
Collins’ office is available to walk-in students through the application process. She and Dean of Educational Programs Ben Partee have also taken steps to improve access to SS-225, the room in the Student Services building designated for clubs.
“We’d like to see more of a variety using it,” Collins said.
There have been concerns in the past about certain groups monopolizing the space. The room now stays locked with its lights out when not in use. But Collins hopes to start filling its schedule with students engaged in all sorts of hobbies, from chess to tea.
To get started, a potential club needs 15 original signatures from current students. Then there’s some paperwork to complete and submit, including a club roster form and constitution.
A faculty advisor is also required. They have to be present at any event your group may hold, but they don’t have to attend regular meetings.
A packet on how to start the process can be found on the Student Life website.
There were 48 clubs registered last semester including ones for yoga, poetry, sign language and video games, and Collins would like to see as many as possible active this fall.
And although Collins doesn’t play favorites, there is one club in particular she wouldn’t mind seeing on campus again.
“I miss the Zombie Preparedness Coalition. I wish they’d come back.”
