The Foundation for Santa Barbara City College announced the $1000 and $500 cash prize winners of its first annual art and design competition for the Campaign for Student Success, ‘Show Us Your Love.”
Foundation Board members judged students’ posters according to how closely the pieces portrayed the theme while still showcasing creativity, individuality and aesthetic appeal. They also looked for pieces versatile enough to be used for the Foundation’s t-shirts or thank you-cards.
Graphic design major Vivian Jeffers won the judges over with her submission featuring positive words such as “helping, family, and support” forming a heart. Her reward was $1,000.
“I was inspired by the love that I have for my husband and family as well as the people that I interact with on a daily basis,” said Jeffers. “In the process of creating the design, I couldn’t think of a single image that represents how to show your love, because a million images came to mind, so I decided to use words that we can all relate to.”
The judges felt the design described the campus, students and staff that make it great.
Jeffers isn’t sure what she wants to do with her prize money.
“I would like to use it on something that will always remind me of this achievement,” she said. “I would like to be reminded that if you work hard and are dedicated to something you love, there will always be some type of reward.”
Graphic design major, Marianne Cothern’s design showcased how returning to college to better oneself shows love for themselves and to others.
“A person goes to college to get a better job that will make them feel more fulfilled and better able to provide for their family. This seems like a powerful expression of love,” said Cothern. “As an older student I know the extra challenge of juggling school with a job and responsibilities at home.
If a student follows through on the commitment to complete courses or earn a degree they are making an investment in themselves…. in their future happiness. This seems like a powerful expression of love.”
The graphic features pictures of parents with their child and a smiling couple because “who doesn’t like a photo of a smiling parent and child?” said Cothern. The judges agreed and awarded Cothern with $500.
Cothern plans to get her husband a more extravagant birthday gift than usual with her prize money.
