City College dancers are selling See’s Candies to cover out-of-pocket costs of production for the spring concert performance, ‘The Collective.’
“The show is a culmination of everyone’s different ideas and choreography,” said Nicole Brown, dancer and City College student. “It’s a mix of everything.”
Tracy Kofford, dance director, is trying to create a truly community based experience with this production.
“This will be my first concert since coming to City College last year,” Kofford said. “The show will feature our student dancers, as well as bring in talent from the community to showcase a great group of dancers.”
The show will feature dancers from many disciplines, including ballet, modern, contemporary, hip-hop, and lyrical performances. There are two student-submitted works, three faculty works, and six guest choreographer works that are being rehearsed in long hours by the dancers everyday.
“The dancers are brilliant,” said René Garcia, Sociology major and one of the student choreographers. “They’re overworked, but they’re brilliant.”
UCSB will also join the City College dancers on stage in April.
An order form to purchase See’s Candies is available on the bulletin board in the dance room Physical Education Room-150, and will only be available to order until March 1.
All of the proceeds from the fundraiser will go to costume payments and other out-of-pocket expenses that the dancers would normally have to pay for.
“I’ve always wanted to be a part of the City College dance program,” said Kara Stewart, guest choreographer and director of Fusion Dance Company. “I am so thankful to be involved in such an amazing show.”
Kofford hopes the show will “bring the community together.”
The Spring Concert is April 19 and 20 at Center Stage Theater in downtown Santa Barbara. Tickets will be available at centerstagetheater.org next month.
